ODF Toolkit gets first Apache release [Mon, 30 Jan 2012 15:17:44 +0000] The ODF (Open Document Format) Toolkit is a set of lightweight Java modules for processing Open Document Format ISO/IEC 26300 documents, the standard format used by OpenOffice and LibreOffice among others. The ODF Toolkit project has just announced its first release since it entering the Apache Software Foundation's project Incubator in August 2011, labelled "0.5-incubating".
Open source surgical robot developed [Mon, 23 Jan 2012 15:23:16 +0000] A multidisciplinary team of engineers from the University of Washington and the University of California, Santa Cruz have developed a surgical robot, called Raven 2, for use as an open source surgical robotics research platform. The Raven 2 is a surgical robot with 7 degrees of freedom, compact electronics and two wing-like arms which end in tiny gripper claws designed to perform surgery on simulated patients. The robot's software is compatible with Robot Operating System, an open source robotics coding platform.
Developer survey results announced by Outercurve Foundation [Tue, 10 Jan 2012 17:06:27 +0000] The Outercurve Foundation has released the results of a survey in which 200 software developers were asked about their open source coding habits. Just over half of the respondents reported that their primary motivation to contribute code was a desire to give back and improve upon the software and projects they use.
Mozilla announces version 2 of the Mozilla Public License [Tue, 10 Jan 2012 17:01:31 +0000] After a two year revision process, Mozilla has announced the release of version 2.0 of the Mozilla Public License (MPL). Like the MPL 1.1, the new licence is a 'file-level copyleft' licence and has been approved by the Free Software Foundation as a free software licence and also by the Open Source Initiative as an open source licence.
NASA launches open source website [Tue, 10 Jan 2012 13:32:02 +0000] NASA has launched code.nasa.gov, a website to act as the central source of information about the agency's open source projects. The site is in development but already contains an overview of NASA's open source projects, such as the interactive 3D world viewer World Wind Java, along with a guide page that provides instructions and how-tos for developing and publishing open source software.

Collaborations Workshop 2012, Oxford, 21-22 March 2012 [Mon, 30 Jan 2012 15:24:17 +0000] The Collaborations Workshop gets researchers and software developers working together to solve research problems. If you're a researcher who wants to make more of software, or a developer who wants to work with researchers, the workshop is the perfect opportunity to meet new collaborators. This year's Collaborations Workshop will be held at Queen's College at the University of Oxford on 21-22 March 2012.
OSS2012, Hammamet, Tunisia, 10-13 September 2012 [Mon, 23 Jan 2012 15:39:57 +0000] OSS2012, the 8th International Conference on Open Source Systems will take place in Hammamet, Tunisia, 10-13 September 2012. The event aims to provide an international forum where a diverse community of professionals from academia, industry and the public sector, and diverse OSS initiatives can come together to share research findings and practical experiences.
Flossie: women and software libre, London, 25-26 May 2012 [Mon, 23 Jan 2012 15:37:58 +0000] Flossie 2012 is an event for women who use or would like to use FLOSS in digital arts, NGOs, education and social change movements. Flossie 2012 will take place on 25-26 May 2012 at Queen Mary at University of London, where participants will come together across boundaries of discipline and sector to share ideas, skills and experience.
FOSDEM, Brussels, Belgium, 4-5 February 2012 [Tue, 20 Dec 2011 17:20:37 +0000] The Free and Open source Software Developers' European Meeting (FOSDEM) is holding its annual event on 4-5 February 2012 in Brussels, Belgium. FOSDEM is the biggest free and non-commercial event organized by and for the community. Its goal is to provide free and open source developers a place to meet. No registration is necessary.
Dev8D conference, London, 14-16 February 2012 [Tue, 06 Dec 2011 17:09:24 +0000] The Developer Community Supporting Innovation project is holding its annual Dev8D conference in London 14-16 February 2012. Dev8D provides opportunities for delegates to learn new skills, experiment with technology and ideas, share and network amongst their peers and even take on a number challenges and win prizes.
