BCS event - Public Funds in the UK: Open Source for Document and Content Management? - London, 7 January 2010 [Tue, 22 Sep 2009 17:16:35 +0100] The British Computer Society's Open Source Specialist Group (OSSG) will be holding a one day event to consider "Public Funds in the UK: Open Source for Document and Content Management? " on Thursday 7 January 2010 at the BCS Central London Offices, First Floor, The Davidson Building, 5 Southampton Street, London WC2E 7HA. This event aims to examine the challenges of web and document management in the public sector, and the part that open source can play. Mark Elkins is interested in hearing from people who would be interested in speaking at this event as well as those interested in attending.
E-Day: a Community Computing Initiative, London, 8 October 2009 [Mon, 21 Sep 2009 16:47:00 +0100] The E-Day consortium is an ad hoc consortium for open source computing in Tower Hamlets. They are holding an afternoon event on 8 October 2009 at the Exmouth Estate Social Club, 7 Brayford Square London, E1 0SG to look at "why the East-End should capitalise on open source software". The event is free to attend.
BCS workshop on Discovering Open Source Enterprise Resource Planning, 24 Aug 2009, London [Tue, 11 Aug 2009 11:35:44 +0100] The British Computer Society's Open Source Specialist Group (OSSG) will be holding a one day workshop on Discovering Open Source Enterprise Resource Planning on Monday 24 August 2009 at the BCS Central London Offices, First Floor, The Davidson Building, 5 Southampton Street, London WC2E 7HA. The cost is £65 for members, £55 for non-members and registration is now open.
Open Source Search event, 29 September 2009, Cambridge [Mon, 10 Aug 2009 16:41:44 +0100] Why not join Open Source Search at the Friends Meeting House in Cambridge for a chance to hear informal presentations from users and developers of open source search systems, followed by ad-hoc discussion and hacking. It is open to any and all members of the open source search communities - whether developers or users. Tickets for the day are free but advance registration is essential.
EuroBSDcon 2009 : September 18-20 September 2009, Cambridge [Tue, 21 Jul 2009 09:43:48 +0100] The European BSD community's annual event to meet, share and interact across the projects will take place 18-20 September 2009 at the University of Cambridge. The conference will consist of a day of tutorials followed by 2 days of conference talks covering a wide variety of BSD related topics. Discounted Early Bird registration runs until 2 September 2009.
IWOCE 2009 workshop - 24 August 2009, Amsterdam [Tue, 02 Jun 2009 16:46:43 +0100] The International Workshop on Open Component Ecosystems (IWOCE) 2009 will be held in Amsterdam on 24 August 2009 as a satellite event of the 7th joint meeting of the European Software Engineering Conference and ACM SIGSOFT Symposium on the Foundations of Software Engineering (ESEC/FSE 2009). The goal of this workshop is to gather together both researchers and practitioners active in open source software engineering, software composition, algorithms, constraint programming, and model-driven engineering to discuss, debate, exchange ideas, and outline common solutions to the problem of static and dynamic component aggregations in software ecosystems.
Red Hat's Open Source Forum event - 16 June 2009, London [Mon, 01 Jun 2009 16:25:28 +0100] Red Hat is holding a one day conference in London on 16 June 2009 to look at open source technologies and how open source solutions have been deployed to make businesses more effective and competitive in their market. With Business and Technical tracks there will be plenty to interest both the IT decision maker and the IT engineer.
Aegis user forum and workshop on open accessibility, 4-5 June 2009, Slough [Tue, 12 May 2009 17:50:23 +0100] Aegis is a large EU project to develop open source accessibility of web apps, mobile and desktop platforms and the project is holding its first pan-European User Forum and Workshop on 4-5 June 2009 at Research In Motion UK Ltd, Slough, Berkshire. The first day will consist of a user forum to facilitate discussion between end-users and application developers. The second day will consist of a workshop on "Accessibility for All: Open Source-based Generalised Accessibility Support for Mainstream ICT Devices/Applications". Participation is free of charge.
RSC South West Summer Conference 16-17 June 2009, Weston-super-Mare [Tue, 12 May 2009 17:29:47 +0100] The annual Regional Support Centre (RSC) South West Summer Conference will take place this year on 16-17 June at Rookery Manor, Weston-super-Mare. Developer Happiness Days, London, 9-13 February 2009 [Mon, 08 Dec 2008 12:26:25 +0000] JISC is sponsoring an event aimed at developers in UK Higher Education that will take place in London on 9-13 February 2009. The event will span 4 days and will consist of a pre-event day focussing on developing skills, followed by a 2 day coding session, and will conclude with a final day focussing on bringing developers into communities based around software platforms. EFMI-BCS conference on Open Source in Healthcare - London, 9-11 Sep 2008 [Wed, 23 Jul 2008 10:51:36 +0100] The European Federation for Medical Informatics (EFMI) is holding a conference with the British Computer Society (BCS) to focus on Open Source in European healthcare. Linux 2008 Conference - Manchester 7-9 Nov 2008 [Wed, 23 Jul 2008 10:37:13 +0100] The Linux 2008 conference organized by the UK's Unix and Open Systems User Group will be held at The Manchester Conference Centre, The University of Manchester, Weston Building, Sackville Street, Manchester from Friday 7 - Sunday 9 November 2008. The conference will start with a day of tutorials on the Friday followed by a two day conference with a choice of two streams covering a variety of subjects, including kernel and desktop development, tools, applications, networking and security.
Open Source World Conference, Malaga, Spain, 20-22 October 2008 [Thu, 26 Jun 2008 16:50:06 +0100] The sixth Open Source World Conference will take place in Malaga, Spain on 20-22 October 2008. The conference is free to attend and the organisers expect 6000 delegates so this looks set to be a big event once again. The Programme Committee is currently accepting proposals for tutorials and workshops as well as traditional presentations but hurry!
Next Generation Networks: Open platforms and services workshop, Cardiff, 18 September 2008 [Wed, 25 Jun 2008 10:58:24 +0100] The first international workshop on Next Generation Networks: Open platforms and services (NGNOPS 2008) will take place on 18 September 2008, at the University of Glamorgan in Cardiff, Wales, UK. The workshop will facilitate discussion on the open source activities contributing to aspects Next Generation Networking and mobile devices, and will explore open standards in these areas.
JISC Conference - Birmingham, 15 April 2008 [Thu, 03 Apr 2008 11:02:27 +0100] JISC's annual conference will take place at the International Convention Centre in Brirmingham on 15 April 2008. This year OSS Watch not only has its usual exhibition stand but also has a demo stand where you will be able to see demos of a variety of JISC open source projects. Registration is now closed but it is possible to follow the conference online during the day.
BCS workshop, London, 15 April 2008 [Thu, 03 Apr 2008 10:45:17 +0100] The British Computer Society's Open Source Specialist Group is hosting a workshop style event on "Opportunities for cooperation between business and UK universities using Open Source that might benefit the UK economy". The workshop, featuring participants from academia and business, will be held at the BCS Central London Offices on Tuesday 15 April 2008 from 11:00-17:30.
Open Source Forum, London, 14 May 2008 [Wed, 02 Apr 2008 11:00:22 +0100] This one day conference, organised by Red Hat and sponsored by Alfresco, Black Duck and Zimbra, will take place on 14 May 2008 at One Great George Street, Westminster, London, SW1P 3AA. The event aims to provide extensive insights into open source technologies presented by the users themselves and the talks will be split between a business and technical track. Ross Gardler, the OSS Watch manager, will be in attendance.
Academy/JISC collaboration event, Nottingham, 11 April 2008 [Tue, 25 Mar 2008 14:11:43 +0000] The fourth Higher Education Academy/JISC collaboration event will take place on 11 April 2008 at the National College for School Leadership in Nottingham. The theme of this event is "Resources: effective approaches for sharing, creating and re-purposing". The event is open to all Subject Centre, JISC Services and JISC RSC staff.
UKUUG Spring 2008 conference - Birmingham, 31 March-2 April 2008 [Tue, 11 Mar 2008 10:51:37 +0000] The UK's Open Systems User Group (UKUUG) is holding its annual Large Installation Systems Administration conference in Birmingham from Monday 31 March to Wednesday 2 April 2008. The conference will commence with a day of tutorials covering Python, Perl and OpenBSD's PF, followed by two days of talks and presentations. The UKUUG is also hosting the UK’s first PostgreSQL User Conference on Wednesday 2 April at the same venue.
Westminster eForum Seminar: Intellectual Property and the future of copyright - London, 31 Mar 2008 [Wed, 27 Feb 2008 11:52:55 +0000] The Westminster eForum (WeF) allows interested politicians and senior officials to discuss issues of public policy relating to the Internet and other technology areas with leaders from industry, responsible interest groups, analysts, academics, journalists and others. WebPA workshop, Loughborough, 5 March 2008 [Tue, 12 Feb 2008 18:18:18 +0000] WebPA is an open source self and peer assessment tool that could allow you to reduce the time you spend on marking whilst enhancing the student learning experience. The WebPA project is holding a two hour introductory workshop covering peer assessment and the WebPA tool on 5 March 2008 at Loughborough University. Deadline for bookings is 27 February 2008.
OpenOffice web seminar - 26 February 2008 [Thu, 07 Feb 2008 12:08:05 +0000] The Nonprofit Technology Network and the Nonprofit Open Source Initiative have joined forces to offer a series of 12 web seminars covering free and open source tools. There will be one seminar a month, covering topics from how to get support for FOSS, highlights of specific FOSS projects like Joomla and CiviCRM, how to migrate to FOSS platforms. The next seminar is "OpenOffice.org: The Free and Open Source Office Suite" and it will take place on 26 February 2008, at 11:00 am PST.
Learning Lab conference - Telford, Shropshire, 6 Feb 2008 [Tue, 22 Jan 2008 11:32:48 +0000] The Learning Lab continues its Changing Faces of Learning conference series with a one day conference on current and emerging learning technologies. BCS conference, London, 7 December 2007 [Mon, 26 Nov 2007 11:39:34 +0000] The British Computer Society, the Trusted Computing project and the Cyber Security Knowledge Transfer Network are joining forces to host a one day conference focussing on creating greater trust in the use of the Internet by the general public. The conference, entitled "Enabling trusted access to e services – Making computing safer for the general public" will be held at the BCS Offices, 6 Southampton Street, London, at 10am on 7 December 2007. JISC e-learning Programme Netskills workshop, Birmingham, 11 Dec 2007 [Mon, 19 Nov 2007 16:31:44 +0000] As part of the JISC e-learning Programme Netskills is running a workshop at the Lakeside Centre, Aston University, Birmingham from 10am-4pm on 11 December 2007. The workshop, entitled "Using Technology for Effective Project Communication", promotes the idea that a project that engages with the community is more likely to be successful and explores the technologies that make such engagement possible.
Google Open Source Jam, London, 29 November 2007 [Fri, 16 Nov 2007 11:54:02 +0000] The next Google London Open Source Jam will be held on on Thursday 29 November 2007 from 6-9:30pm at Belgrave House 76, Buckingham Palace Road, Victoria, London, SW1W 9TQ. These jams are aimed at developers who wish to engage with other like minded developers on open source projects and this particular jam will focus on distributed systems.

The WeF is holding a seminar on Open Source Software to examine key issues around the emergence and development of open source software, for business, government, public bodies and consumers. Delegates are high-level decision makers from education, business and government - the three key areas driving e-learning adoption and innovation. This year open source features high on the agenda. Randy Metcalfe of OSS Watch will be joining a plenary session that includes Susan d'Antoni, UNESCO, Prof. Dr. Rob Koper, Open University of The Netherlands and Dr. Vijay Kumar, MIT, to discuss open standards, open source and open content.
An introduction to Creative Commons licences, London, 21 November 2005 [Fri, 04 Nov 2005 09:00:06 +0000] This half-day workshop, hosted by the Association for Information Management, is a basic introduction to Creative Commons and its implications for the information professional. Participants will look at the process of choosing a licence; then through discussion and group work will consider related issues and the role Creative Commons will play in the future. Randy Metcalfe of OSS Watch will be joining Marieke Guy of UKOLN to lead the discussions.

Open Source for Education in Europe conference, Heerlen, The Netherlands, 14-15 November 2005 [Wed, 02 Nov 2005 12:31:30 +0000] SIGOSEE, JOIN and the Open University of The Netherlands host this two-day conference on open source in education. Amongst the many fine speakers, look for OSS Watch's own Stuart Yeates. Stuart will be speaking on the development of university policies that engage with open source software.
SocialSource, London, 9 November 2005 [Tue, 25 Oct 2005 12:08:29 +0100] The Voluntary and Community Sector Open Source Initiative is hosting its second SocialSource event. OSS Watch will be giving a presentation, along with the Open Source Consortium, Oxfam and others.
ICT Community of Practice, Stirling, 1 November 2005 [Tue, 25 Oct 2005 11:57:30 +0100] The Scottish Further Education Unit host this event to assist members with addressing software licensing options, explore information security management requirements and identify staff development needs. OSS Watch will be represented by Randy Metcalfe, who will no doubt be discussing the new JISC open source policy.
